1. Honey


Honey is a natural sweetener that comes, as everyone knows, from bees. This has a first drawback: it is not vegan, which excludes part of the population from its consumption.

It also has a high caloric content, since it is considered as free sugar. Its composition is mostly sugar, so if you're looking to lose weight, this is probably not the best sweetener for coffee.

The consequences for your health are practically the same as if you continue using refined sugar as is.

2. Saccharin


Until a few years ago it was the most common and practically the only sweetener marketed on a large scale. This has changed, luckily for those who can't stand the taste of saccharin.

Its composition has been the subject of controversy because for a time it was identified as carcinogenic, although finally these accusations have been dismissed and now saccharin is considered as totally safe for human consumption.

The maximum recommended amount is 5 mg per kg of weight in adults, and is one of the few totally alkalic sweeteners, that is, with zero calories. If you are not going to abuse and want to sweeten coffee while taking care of your weight, it is a very good option.

3. Aspartame and cyclamate


Two newcomers, aspartame and cyclamate have a sweetening power approximately 200 times that of sugar. They also have few calories, a practically insignificant amount.

They are the most common in light and zero sodas, so you want it or not it is almost certain that you are consuming them. Like saccharin, for a time they were targeted by the wrath of a certain sector of the population because they were supposedly carcinogenic, unfounded accusations and without scientific evidence.

Now they are used industrially and are sold in almost every supermarket. Its main difference with saccharin is the taste, so choosing one or the other is a matter of taste. They are undoubtedly two of the best options to sweeten coffee.

4. Stevia


Is stevia healthy? Is it the best sweetener for coffee and for your health? For now, since no one has proven otherwise, although scientific evidence in this regard is still scarce. This plant is common in South America, although the rest of the West came as a sweetener recently. In addition, stevia extract sold in supermarkets has little to do with the plant.

However, what studies published so far say is that it does not involve health risks and could even be good for lowering blood pressure. However, both claims still have to be scientifically consolidated.

The main problem with stevia is its taste. Sweetens, but does not look anything like sugar, saccharin or cyclamate. Rather it has a taste similar to licorice, not liked by many people. Combined with the taste of coffee does not have an exquisite taste, but for tastes the colors.
